Malware The Facts

What is Malware?

Malware is a terminology to describe various types of malicious code that might include Worms, Trojans and Viruses. These types of Malware are generally destructive and will utilise common communication methods to spread. i.e. Worms can be sent through email and instant messages, Trojans dropped from web sites, and virus-infected files downloaded from file sharing programs. Malware will also attempt to exploit any existing vulnerabilities on the infected system making their entry quiet and easy and also open ports so external users can access your computer without your knowledge.

How can you spot malware?

Being vigilant with your inbound email and Instant Message attachments - ensure that they come from a trusted source and that they are expected. It is possible to 'spoof' someone's email, so an email may look like it is coming from a friend but it contains a attachment that looks wrong - Don't open it, contact the sender to confirm they sent it.

Have email attachments scanned by your resident Anti virus program prior to opening or previewing

Delete all unwanted messages without opening or previewing. Never click on any Web links sent by someone you do not know - delete the mail.

If a person on your Buddy list is sending strange messages, files, or web site links, terminate your IM session - a 'spoofed' Instant Message contact is also possible so always be cautious what information you enter in Instant Message chats. Never give our personal information via email or instant message.

Scan all files with your resident virus scanner before transferring them to your system. Only transfer files from a well known source.

Configure your Firewall to block all unsolicited outbound communication.

Keep security patches up to date.
