Spyware infections can happen many ways. downloads from Web sites, instant messages, file sharing programs, email messages. It is also possible that a person may unknowingly receive spyware by accepting an End User License Agreement from a software program - some company's include tracking software or adware as part of their package and it is written into the licence agreement, those users that just click YES to install the program also get the spyware bundle as well.
By definition 'Spyware' tends to remain stealthy and will try to remain unnoticed while running on a users system, either by actively hiding in legitimate processes or files or by simply not making its presence on a system known to the user
Various programs are available to proactively protect from spyware and other security risks and they usually also include scanning and removal tools.
Configure your firewall to block unsolicited requests for outbound communication this will restrict the spyware from 'calling home' with your sensitive data
Do not accept or open suspicious error dialogs from within the browser - these can be Java based and can perform spyware drops on you clicking either the 'Accept' or 'Decline' prompts on the dialog box.

Keep software and security patches up to date - In some cases Spyware can be blocked prior to it getting onto your computer but if your security software is not up to date then you are less likely to block it.
